This is the last original issue of The Loyola Phoenix for the school year. We’ve published 23 issues throughout the 2024-2025 school year, with each containing at least one recap on an athletics event.
I’m currently sitting in The Phoenix newsroom during our final production night, reflecting on everything the sports section did this past year. There was a lot the readers saw, but much more happened behind the scenes.
Although the school year — and this volume of The Phoenix — is coming to a close, I want to thank everyone who picked up a copy of the paper and supported student media this year.
While this may be the end of our coverage, the athletics season is far from over.
Softball continues their regular season with a game against Northwestern University Wednesday, April 16, before continuing conference play against the University of Massachusetts April 18-19.
After two more conference matchups against George Mason University April 26-27 and George Washington University May 3-4, the team heads to Washington, D.C. for the Atlantic 10 conference tournament May 7-12.
Men’s volleyball recently received the No. 1 seed in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association playoffs, and they’ll play their first game Saturday, April 19. If they advance, the Ramblers have a chance to host the semifinal round Wednesday, April 23 and the championship game Saturday, April 26.
If the team wins the tournament, they’ll qualify for the NCAA tournament, which will take place May 8-12 in Columbus, Ohio.
Track and Field is traveling to California April 17-18 for the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa and the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut. Some of the team will remain in Illinois for the Wheaton “Don Church” Twilight Meet.
Following the Elmhurst Twilight Invite in Elmhurst, Ill. April 25, the team will head to Fairfax, Va. for the A10 conference championships May 3-4. If any runners qualify, they’ll attend the NCAA Preliminaries at the end of May.
Women’s golf ends their season this weekend at the A10 championship in Orlando, while the men play in the same event April 22-24.
Men’s and women’s soccer seasons begin during summer break in early August, and women’s volleyball starts closer to the beginning of the fall semester.
Just because summer is fast approaching doesn’t mean your support for Loyola sports should fade away. Most games will be available to stream, so be sure to tune in and watch.
If you’re one of the few who only read our recaps and don’t watch games, I apologize for our brief absence. My writers and I will be taking a well-deserved break from school, which ultimately means a break from The Phoenix as well.
Once again, I thank you for your support this year — our section wouldn’t be what it is without our readers.
Thank you all, and see you next year.
