Golf is in Full Swing as Men and Women Compete in Separate Invites

Men’s and Women’s golf opened their seasons at separate invitationals, each placing in the bottom half of the leaderboard

The Loyola Men’s and Women’s golf teams competed at separate tournaments the first weekend of September. The women attended the Redbird Invitational hosted by Illinois State University Sept. 7-8 while the men traveled to Pawleys Island, S.C., for the Golfweek Challenge Sept. 6-9. 

Women’s Golf 

The women completed the 54-hole tournament with a total 929 (310-310-309) strokes, placing them in 11th out of 16 teams. 

Eastern Kentucky University took the top spot with a total of 879 (299-292-288) strokes, and the Colonel’s second-year Karra Tucker finished in first place on the individual side with a three-under par score of 213 (74-70-69) strokes. 

Leading the Ramblers, third-year Cassie Psuik tied for 27th with a score of 228 (75-74-79). In her final round of the tournament, Psuik added an 8-bogey high to her total, leading to a total of 7-over-par. 

Behind Psuik, second-year Grace Hui finished the tournament with a score of 231 (81-75-75) and in a tie for 34th place. With eight, she recorded the most birdies on the team and ninth overall for the tournament.

First-year Teagan Connors finished in a tie for 42nd place with a total of 233 (80-76-77), marking her second appearance for the Ramblers in her inaugural fall season. 

Finishing in a tie for 53rd place, second-year Madison Haugen totaled a score of 238 (74-86-78) strokes. The second round was a challenge as Haugen added nine bogeys and three double bogeys for a round total of 14-over par. 

Individually, first-year Maureen O’Leary finished with a score of 244 (83-75-86) and a tie for 73rd. In the first 10 holes of her second round, O’Leary went even-par before adding a bogey and then double bogey for her total three-over par round.  

Lastly for the Ramblers, third-year Grace Durkin finished with a total of 255 (82-85-88) and in 83rd place. A total of five double-bogeys and six bogeys added to her third round total of 88. 

The Ramblers head to Paducah, Ky., for The Velvet Classic, Sept. 15-16, hosted by Murray State University.

Men’s Golf 

The men’s team tee’d off their fall season with a tie for ninth out of 13 teams, going 8-under-par for a total of 856 (288-279-289). 

Georgia Southern University took the top spot going 35-under-par with a total 829 (276-277-276) strokes. Individually, the Eagles’ second-year Harrison Sewell finished in first place with a score of 202 (68-66-68) strokes, going 14-under-par. 

Fourth-year Dori Lee led the Ramblers, shooting 5-under-par with a total of 211 (69-72-70) for a tie for 16th. Lee ended his second round with triple birdies to offset the five bogeys he totaled earlier, leading to an even-par round.  

One stroke behind Lee was fourth-year Charlie Kulwin who finished in a tie for 23rd with a score of 212 (73-65-74). Kulwin recorded a personal best round with his second-round score of 65 and led the team in birdies with a total of 15. 

Tying for 43rd place was fourth-year Sebastian Kasun with a total of 216 (74-70-72), finishing with an even score. Kasun ended the tournament scoring five birdies in both his first and second rounds, leading to an even-par first round and a 2-under-par second round. 

Fourth-year Ryan Walsh finished in a tie for 54th place with a score of 220 (72-73-75). Walsh held his even-par score through the last eight holes of his last round after settling his score from two bogeys with two birdies. 

Lastly, third-year Jackson Overton finished with a total of 223 (73-72-78), placing him in a tie for 64th place. Six birdies in his final round led to his otherwise even-round, leading to a six-over-par finish.  

Head coach Peter Pougnet reflected on the team’s performance during the first tournament of the season. 

“As a team, we played 48 good holes and just need to work on closing the event.” Pougnet said. “As a whole, we did a really good job and will continue to improve. Excited for next week.” 

The Ramblers head to Westchester, Ill. for the Highlands Invitational hosted by Wake Forest University Sept. 15-16.
