Loyola women’s volleyball suffered its fifth consecutive loss against DePaul University in the last match of the Chicago Cup. Second-year outside hitter Kaitlyn Burke led the Rambler offense, tallying 18 kills, while DePaul’s first-year outside hitter Kendall Timme supplied 23 kills for the Blue Demons.
DePaul’s fourth-year middle blocker Katelynn Oxley got a kill to start the first set. Burke started the Rambler offense with a kill, but the Blue Demons answered with a 3-0 run of kills from first-year Blue Demon outside hitter Morgan Stewart and Oxley, giving DePaul a 4-1 lead.
DePaul launched another 3-0 run on two kills by third-year defensive specialist Nora Mannion and second-year middle blocker Jade Dudley-Epps. The 7-2 Blue Demon lead prompted a Loyola timeout.
A stuff from fourth-year middle blocker Ann Marie Remmes and a service ace by second-year defensive specialist Jae Fitting gave the Ramblers momentum. Kills from graduate right side hitter Josie Halbleib and Nguyen were met with a kill from DePaul’s first-year outside hitter Martina Diana, closing the gap to 8-7.
Burke tabbed three kills and a block, tying the set at 11. Nguyen and Timme traded kills before the Blue Demons went on a 7-1 run, including three kills from Stewart, two kills from Oxley and a service ace from Timme, making the score 18-15.
Back-to-back kills from Remmes followed by four Blue Demon errors and a kill from Halbleib put the Ramblers in the lead at 21-19. DePaul’s Diana scored a solo block, and two kills from third-year middle blocker Meghan Scholz were met with kills from Remmes and Burke, giving the Ramblers a 23-21 lead.
Scholz tabbed a kill followed by an Oxley block, and a Loyola error had the set tied at 24. Burke added a kill for the Ramblers, which DePaul met with a Timme kill.
Oxley and Stewart teamed up on a block for the Blue Demons which was answered by a block from second-year outside hitter Kate Maley and third-year middle blocker Avary DeBlieck. An Oxley kill and a service ace from first-year libero Eva Hurrle sealed the set from DePaul with a score of 28-26.
DePaul went on a 5-1 run to start the second set, consisting of kills from Stewart and Timme and a service ace by Hurrle.
Maley scored a kill for the Ramblers, followed by a service ace from second-year libero Sam Falk. Diana responded with a kill and service ace for the Blue Demons, increasing their lead to 8-4.
Nguyen and Remmes gained a block and Burke followed with two kills. Timme countered with a kill, but the Ramblers cut the score to 9-7. Two kills from Stewart were answered with DeBlieck, Maley and Halbleib kill, a Maley service ace and a Halbleib and Remmes block.
Timme and Dudley-Epps kills out of the timeout were netted by DePaul errors. Dudley-Epps tallied a kill, matched by kills from Remmes and Burke. A setter dump from DePaul’s second-year setter Amanda Saeger tied the set at 18.
Oxley and Timme swapped kills with Burke, Nguyen and Maley. A block from Remmes and Maley followed by a Maley kill prompted another DePaul timeout.
Stewart tallied a kill for DePaul, but a Remmes kill and Maley service ace gave the Ramblers set point. A Blue Demon attack error tied the match at a set apiece, with a score of 25-21.
A kill and block from Stewart got the Blue Demons started in the third set. Remmes established the offense with a kill for the Ramblers, but two Loyola errors and a Hurrle service ace gave DePaul an early 5-1 lead.
A 4-0 Rambler run consisted of a kill from Nguyen and a block and solo stuff from Remmes to tie the set at five. Fourth-year middle blocker Ella Ramsay checked in her first kill of the night and two Maley kills and errors from the Blue Demons forced a DePaul timeout.
Fourth-year Blue Demon right side hitter Grace Brooker and Timme swapped kills with Maley and Remmes. A Burke and Remmes block gave the Ramblers the advantage at 15-12.
Stewart tabbed a kill which was met with two from Burke. Timme grabbed a kill followed by a Dudley-Epps service ace, but a Ramsay kill forced a DePaul timeout down 20-16.
Oxley added a block and kill. Nguyen, Remmes and Maley responded with kills, but Timme’s kill kept the Blue Demons in the set. Hurrle tallied a service ace closing the gap, down to 23-21. Remmes gained a kill, giving the Ramblers set point. Burke closed out the third set at 25-23.
The Ramblers started the fourth set on a 4-0 run. Timme countered with a kill but the Blue Demons used a timeout down 6-3. Falk scored a service ace, and Remmes followed with a kill. DePaul fought back, and despite another Remmes kill, Loyola used a timeout, up 10-9.
Timme and Remmes traded kills followed by a Rambler net violation. Burke and Timme each grabbed two kills to tie the set at 14. Two kills from Stewart and Timme along with Rambler attack errors gave DePaul an 18-15 lead.
Multiple errors followed from both sides. A Maley kill and Remmes solo block was combated with a Stewart kill, tying the set at 22.
Burke and Ramsay swapped kills with Timme. Two Nguyen kills were met by Oxley. A Rambler attack error gave DePaul set point and Oxley finished the set with a kill at 29-27.
The fifth set began with a 5-0 run for the Blue Demons, including kills from Timme and Oxley as well as an Oxley and Brooker block. A service error from DePaul put Loyola on the board.
Ramsay and Halbleib tabbed a block and two Blue Demon errors gave the Ramblers momentum, but a Timme kill and service ace from second-year defensive specialist Abby Cahill extended the DePaul lead to 9-4.
Burke and Nguyen scored kills and a Nguyen block forced a Blue Demon timeout. Timme came out of the timeout with a kill followed by an error from each side. A Stewart kill brought the score to 13-10 for DePaul.
Brooker gained a kill to give the Blue Demons set point and a Timme kill ended the fifth set with a score of 15-11, giving Depaul the win.
After the match, head coach Amanda Berkley said she needs her team to side out at a faster pace.
“I think both teams need to do a better job of siding out more efficiently,” Berkley said. “That’s just part of the game. I think we played well at times. It’s just such a bummer we didn’t put it all together for a win when we had those few match points.”
