Last-second own goal by the Ramblers seals 2-1 win for Davidson Sept. 28.
The Loyola women’s soccer team took a loss to Davidson College at Alumni Soccer Stadium for their second consecutive road match Sept. 28. The Wildcats beat the Ramblers 2-1, with the Ramblers scoring an own goal in the final seconds of the game.
In the second minute of the game, third-year forward Zoe Hevey took a shot against Davidson, but it went out left. Wildcats’ fourth-year defender Charlotte Snead and second-year forward Charlotte Hansen then took two shots against Loyola. Snead’s shot went out right, but Hansen’s was saved by redshirt second-year goalkeeper Allison Deardorff.
Hevey and fourth-year forward Molly Pistorius retaliated with two shots against the Wildcats, but both shots went out top and left of the goal.
The first goal came early into the half, in the 15th minute. Wildcat fourth-year forward Dakota Lyons finished a feed from Davidson’s fourth-year midfielder SJ Pak to put the Wildcats up 1-0.
Three minutes later, the Ramblers had a corner kick, but nothing came from it as the ball was booted up the field by Wildcat defenders. During the 34th minute, there was a foul by Davidson’s third-year forward Kiera Pohan against a Rambler.
Loyola had two shots by Pistorius and fourth-year forward Meghan Economos within 30 seconds of each other, but both went past Davidson’s goal. The Ramblers were then given two corner kicks within two minutes of each other. After both corners, the Ramblers unsuccessfully shot against Davidson.
In the final minute of the half, Loyola had two shots on goal within seconds of each other by Pistorius and first-year forward Ava Fleming. Both were headed to the bottom center of the goal and were saved by Davidson’s first-year goalkeeper Grace Stair.
At the end of the first half, Loyola had 11 shots to Davidson’s four, and Deardorff had made one save while Stair made two.
The second half began with an offside call against Davidson three minutes in. In the 53rd minute, Loyola scored their first goal of the game, where first-year defender Abby Sudkamp received a pass from second-year defender Catherine Cline, bringing the match to a tie.
Loyola had two consecutive shots on goal in the 64th minute by Pistorius and second-year midfielder Lydia Case. Both were headed to the bottom center of the goal but were saved by Stair. Two minutes later, Davidson recorded a shot on goal, but Deardorff stopped the ball.
In the 77th minute, there were two consecutive fouls on Ramblers’ third-year midfielder Ansley Cryan and first-year midfielder Mary Fornelli. Davidson then had two unfruitful corner kicks within seconds of each other. One minute later, Davidson was called offside.
In the 83rd minute, Loyola was awarded a corner kick. The kick resulted in a shot on goal by Cryan, but Stair saved it. With three minutes left of the game, there were five shots taken from both sides. Three of them were shots on goal.
At the very end of the match — with four seconds left in the game — a Davidson cross from Snead was accidentally kicked into the net by the Ramblers, scoring an own goal. This gave Davidson the win, bringing the closing score to 2-1.
The match ended with Loyola having taken 20 shots to Davidson’s eight, and Loyola made three saves to Davidson’s five.
Loyola next plays Oct. 2 at home to take on George Washington University at 7 p.m. Streaming will be available on ESPN.
