Loyola men’s basketball was taken down by the University of Dayton Jan. 16 in a 78-51 loss. Flyers third-year guard De’Shayne Montgomery led the game with 21 points, while third-year center Miles Rubin led the Ramblers with 14 points and 8 rebounds.

The game started slowly with two minutes of scoreless play from both teams, but swapped dunks by Dayton redshirt second-year forward Jaiun Simon and Rubin started the scoring.

A 3-pointer by Montgomery was followed a minute later by a fourth-year forward Joshua Ola-Joseph’s layup. After a block by Montgomery, Dayton fourth-year guard Javon Bennett shot a 3-pointer, which was retaliated by Rubin with a jumper. A three from first-year guard Nic Anderson gave the Ramblers a 9-8 lead in the seventh minute.

A minute later, Ola-Joseph netted a layup, as did fourth-year guard Kymany Houinsou. Another minute of scoreless play occurred, but it was broken by a 3-pointer from first-year Flyer forward Damon Friery. Rubin put two more points on the board with a layup, and a foul on redshirt first-year forward Brayden Young returned possession to the Flyers.

Simon went to the line and made his first of two free throws, but the second was rebounded by Houinsou. Another foul on Young sent Dayton’s second-year guard Bryce Heard to the line, where he netted one of two shots.

Dayton’s graduate guard Keonte Jones and Ola-Joseph traded jumpers before a dunk by Montgomery brought the score even at 17. A foul on second-year guard Daniil Glazkov put Simon at the line again, adding two points to the Flyers’ score.

A layup by Ola-Joseph evened the score again, and a foul on Dayton fourth-year forward Jacob Conner put Houinsou at the line for two successful free throws. A jumper by Houinsou put the Ramblers on top at 23-19.

A foul on fourth-year guard Caleb Reese gave Bennett a chance at two points for Dayton, which he made. A Montgomery layup was retaliated with a 3-pointer from third-year guard Deywilk Tavarez, and a foul on Simon sent Reese to the line for two free throws.

Simon took a trip to the line off a foul on Ola-Joseph, adding two points to the scoreboard and shrinking the Ramblers’ lead. Simon’s second trip — 15 seconds later off a foul on Tavarez — put two more points on Dayton’s race to close the gap.

A three-point play by Bennett, as well as a free throw by Conner gave Dayton the 31-28 lead. Tavarez went to the line off a foul on Simon and netted both his free throws, sending the Ramblers into halftime trailing 31-30.

Dayton started the second half with a layup from Bennett and a jumper by Heard. An and-one foul on Reese sent Heard to the line for a successful free throw. Rubin netted a jumper before Jones responded with a 3-pointer.

A foul on Anderson set Montgomery to the line a minute later, where he made both free throws. A Houinsou dunk was met with a jumper from Heard, which put Dayton in the lead 46-34.

Rubin and Montgomery traded layups, and a foul on first-year Flyers guard Sean Pouedet put Reese at the line, making the second of two free throws. A layup by Jones was retaliated by Rubin with a layup and a dunk, shrinking the Dayton lead.

A foul on Jones sent Tavarez to the line, which added a point to the board. Houinsou was called on a foul, giving Conner a chance at two more points for Dayton, which he took. A 3-pointer by Tavarez was met with a foul call on Ola-Joseph and a netted free throw by Bennett.

Another foul was called on Tavarez, and Simon successfully put up two free throws, extending the Dayton lead 55-45. A minute later, a Montgomery layup and 3-pointer, as well as a dunk by Heard, strengthened the Dayton lead to 62-45.

Houinsou’s layup was met with a 3-pointer by Bennett, and he followed with another a minute later. A foul on Reese put Montgomery at the line for another two points, but a foul on Heard sent Anderson to the line — making his second of two free throws.

Bennett netted a layup before Glazkov and Montgomery traded threes, as the half ended with a 3-pointer by Friery, sealing the 78-51 Dayton victory.

The Ramblers return to Gentile Arena Jan. 24 to take on Duquesne University and celebrate Latine Heritage Day. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and can be streamed on Marquee Sports Network.
