The Phoenix news section saw amazing talent this year. With poignant stories important to the Rogers Park and Loyola communities, our publication saw a jump in readership, and our paper was recognized at the national level as a result of the ICE tracker created in the fall semester.
The retirement of Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, BVM, at the age of 106 at the start of the academic year, followed by her death in October reshaped the core of what it means to be a Rambler at Loyola. The Loyola community then grieved the tragic loss of first-year student Sheridan Gorman.
Newswriters rose to the occasion with localized reporting of national events. Writers covered the No Kings protests in both October and March and reported on the Loyola Jesuits’ efforts to bring awareness to the mistreatment of immigrants. We conducted extensive reporting on ICE’s presence in Chicago, specifically near Loyola’s Lake Shore and Water Tower Campuses.
The news section also saw the advent of the Congressional Catch-up column, in which the news editors interviewed candidates for the IL-09. Within our reporting, we interviewed Daniel Biss in February, who won the primary election March 17.
The news team is incredibly thankful for the student journalists who dedicated their time to learning the craft of newswriting and reporting. The paper wouldn’t be what it is without them.
Paige Dillinger is a second-year political science and english double major from Austin, TX, and has been writing for The Phoenix since her first month at Loyola. Her journalism favorites include local politics and investigative stories. She enjoys sunshine on a crisp winter day, movies with scores by John Williams, scoffing at prices in antique stores and SNL when it’s good.
Ava Witherite is the deputy news editor of the paper and is a third-year multimedia journalism major with a minor in marketing. She joined The Phoenix at the start of her sophomore year and has enjoyed newswriting ever since. Some of her interests beyond writing are finding new music, going the gym and playing The New York Times games.
