Women’s Soccer Draws on the Road to Marquette

Loyola women’s soccer were unable to pick up the win against Marquette University Sept. 13, drawing at one goal each. They outshot the Golden Eagles 17 to 13 and extended their unbeaten streak to five games.

The game started quickly with Marquette’s first-year midfielder Callie Hefner challenging third-year midfielder Lydia Case in the second minute, winning Loyola a foul. Eight minutes later, Marquette conceded another foul when first-year forward Kaylie Sheehan took out fifth-year defender Emily Roberts. 

In the 11th minute, Marquette got their first shot on goal as fourth-year midfielder Kiley McMinn whipped a shot to the top left of the net. Her effort was saved by fourth-year goalkeeper Allison Deardorff, conceding a corner kick that amounted to nothing.

The Ramblers took a corner of their own a minute later, but it provided nothing productive. Loyola then let loose their first three shots of the half between the 13th and 16th minutes, courtesy of fifth-year defender Olivia Beam, fourth-year forward and midfielder Zoe Hevey and fifth-year forward and midfielder Mia Lanni. 

Roberts’ foul on Golden Eagles’ first-year forward Ava Jack Shaw led to another shot on target by Marquette’s third-year defender Lily Coats. Her shot found the bottom center of the net and the safe hands of Deardorff. The two resulting corner kicks yielded nothing for the Golden Eagles.

Hefner fouled Case for the second time in the 22nd minute. Seven minutes later, Loyola’s third-year defender Catherine Cline was given a yellow card for dissent. In the 33rd minute, first-year forward and midfielder Addison Schaffer took a shot, but she couldn’t get it on target. Hevey took one of her own, but she fared the same as Schaffer. 

Marquette’s second-year defender Clare Shea’s foul on first-year midfielder Riga Kallaba saw the Ramblers awarded another free kick, but nothing came of it. In the 39th minute, Hefner fouled second-year forward Ava Flemming, and a minute later second-year midfielder Mary Fornelli gave a foul back, taking out Marquette’s first-year defender Allessandra Russo.

Golden Eagles’ second-year midfielder Olivia Hernandez took a shot with four minutes left in the half, but it didn’t find the target, the half ending with Fornelli fouling Russo.

The Golden Eagles started the second half on the front-foot with Jack Shaw taking a shot that was saved by Deardorff at the bottom left side of the net just two minutes in. A foul by Case on Hernandez resulted in Marquette getting a shot on target through Shea, whose attempt veered toward the top right of the goal, but was saved by Deardorff.

Fourth-year midfielder Maggie Schmidt took a shot two minutes later, but it was blocked by a Marquette defender. A shot from Hevey in the 53rd was put on target, but was saved by Marquette’s first-year goalkeeper Mia Hurd. Two minutes later, Loyola was awarded a free kick for a foul on Case by Hefner.

Schmidt got another shot off in the 55th minute, but it veered off target. Coats put one on goal four minutes later, but it was easily handled by Deardorff. The subsequent corner kick saw two shots from Marquette’s fourth-year defender Ella McAleenan, the first of which being cleared away and the second long range effort being punched over the bar by Deardorff.

Hefner’s challenge on Hevey gave Loyola a free kick in a promising position. Fourth-year forward Emily Rossi’s shot was initially saved by Hurd, but was guided in by the left foot of Kallaba. The shot hit home on the left side of the goal and gave the Ramblers a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute.

It didn’t last long, however, as just a minute later the Golden Eagles struck back. A pass from Shea bounced in front of goal and was chested over Deardorff and in by McMinn, tying the score at one.

Hefner was fouled twice in quick succession by Weissman and Case. Hevey got a shot off in the 74th, but it was blocked. In the 75th Hevey was fouled by Sheehan, and a minute later, she got her back with a foul.

Hevey then had a go from a long way out — and if it wasn’t for a stretch from Hurd, it would have found the net, but instead went wide. The Ramblers didn’t let up as Beam took a shot that missed the net, and Hevey attempted two more tries that were blocked. During this period, Hevey also picked up a yellow card for dissent.

Another shot from Hevey was put on target, but was saved by Hurd near the bottom left side of goal. Two minutes later, a foul on Schmidt led to an effort on goal from Case, which made its way to the top right of the net but was saved by Hurd.

Roberts received a yellow card in the 89th minute for dissent. An off-target shot from Jack Shaw in the same minute was the last action of the match as it ended in a tough fight to a draw at one.

Head Coach Jon Sandoval credited his player’s effort in the match.

“We have to show more competitive maturity in big moments,” Sandoval said. “All in all though, we are really proud of the effort today.”

The Ramblers begin conference play on the road against Fordham University in the Bronx, New York Sept. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
