Women’s Golf Stumbles in Velvet Classic

Loyola women’s golf traveled to Paducah, Ky. to compete in the Velvet Classic hosted by Murray State Sept. 14-15. The Ramblers finished in a tie for ninth place out of 14 teams after three rounds of play. 

The first round of play was tough for the Ramblers, shooting 18 over par, but they dipped in the second and third rounds, shooting 28 and 24 over par, respectively. 

Third-year Grace Hui played well in the first round, shooting two-over-par, but in the second round, Hui stumbled with a score of 10 over par. With a score of three over par, Hui jumped up 14 places, ending tied for 29th place with a total score of 15 over par. 

With this score, Hui recorded a team-high five birdies over the course of two days, and her performance in the first round tied with second-year Robbin Zetrouer’s first round for the team’s best round. 

Zetrouer finished one stroke behind Hui, securing a tie in 35th place with an overall score of +16 (+2, +9, +5). 

Second-year Maureen O’Leary stood in 38th place with a score of +18 (+8, +5, +5) while third-year Madison Haugen secured a tie for 47th place, playing well in the first two rounds with only six and four over par but struggling in the third round, shooting 11 over par for a total score of +21. 

Head Coach Brandy Johnston said she was proud of the way the players showed up under the circumstances of the week. 

“We played a little short-handed this week due to injuries and illness,” Johnston said. “They battled every round, which is exactly what you hope for as a coach. I’m excited to see what this group can do when we are back to full strength.”

The Ramblers travel to Manhattan, Kan. to compete in the Powercat Classic hosted by Kansas State University Sept. 28-29.
