Chicago Police arrested a 25-year-old Rogers Park man in connection to the shooting of first-year student Sheridan Gorman March 19, according to police records obtained by the Chicago Tribune. The person of interest is currently being questioned.
The suspect hasn’t been charged, according to the Tribune.
There is still no known motive for the shooting, which occurred around 1:30 a.m. Thursday on the pier at Tobey Prinz Beach. Gorman was shot and killed while walking with a group of her friends near the 1000 block of West Pratt Boulevard, The Phoenix reported.
Witnesses told police a man wearing black clothes and a mask aimed and fired a gun at Gorman as she tried to run away, according to the arrest report obtained by the Tribune. Officers recovered a single shell casing about 40 feet from Gorman’s body, the report said.
The report described nearby surveillance video, which captured the suspect a few minutes after the shooting walking west to Pratt Boulevard. Police identified the man partially because of a “distinct limp,” the report said. The suspect entered a close-by apartment building, which was captured via internal surveillance cameras with the suspect no longer wearing a mask.
Gorman, an 18-year-old originally from Yorktown, N.Y., was described by friends and family as compassionate, funny and joyous, The Phoenix reported. She was a part of Cru, a Christian group on Loyola’s campus.
Loyola held a vigil for her Thursday night where students, faculty and community members filed into Madonna della Strada Chapel to mourn her death. Members of Gorman’s family were present at the service.
“Someone made a deliberate choice that stole our daughter and forever changed our family,” Gorman’s parents said in a statement. “We are demanding answers, and we will not stop until the person responsible is identified and brought to justice.”
This is a developing story.
