The most riveting heroes are often the ones who are uncertain and forced to rise to life-or-death occasions.

Ryan Gosling’s fresh look and reluctant hero archetype render him apt for a sci-fi film in which he’s humanity’s last hope, embodying a character who’s simply ordinary but deeply human. Creating an emotional spectacle through his charismatic on-screen presence, he proves that even the most conventional individual can be essential and hold remarkable responsibilities.

Project Hail Mary,” based on Andy Weir’s bestselling 2021 novel of the same name, relies upon scientific discovery that’ll not only save Earth, but the entire universe. Directed by filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the adaptation successfully translates an emotionally resonant and compelling story to the silver screen.

The premise focuses on a global space crisis that prompts an international team to launch Project Hail Mary in hopes of mediating the conflict and saving humanity.

Middle school science teacher Ryland Grace (Gosling) is recruited for this mission. Grace rises to the challenge, facing insurmountable odds while demonstrating resourcefulness and competence in the face of it. Gosling (“Barbie,” “La La Land”) blends humor and vulnerability to make the story accessible, even when engaging in complex scientific ideas.

Within a runtime of two hours and 36 minutes, Lord and Miller (“21 Jump Street,” “The Lego Movie”) effectively condense Weir’s 500-page novel, focusing deeply on human perspective.

Although certain pieces of the original novel are inevitably omitted, the narrative’s timeline is compressed to become further focused on the emerging relationship between Grace and his new outer space companion, inventive spider-like life form, Rocky. Through such human-alien connections, the film prioritizes character development through its science fiction motifs of wonder and adventure.

The film also incorporates flashback sequences that provide further context into Grace’s background, adding emotional layers to the story’s structure.

In addition to the film’s prioritization of emotional tone, it also leans into humor, appealing to a wide variety of audiences. Through running gags and catchphrases, Gosling, his costars and the directors demonstrate that science fiction narratives can portray sentiment and comedy at the same time.

Through strategic costume and set design, the directors pave new ways for viewers to feel completely consumed by the film. “Project Hail Mary” is visually striking, capturing the movement of outer space and using harmonious color to enhance the emotional tone.

The film’s original score, composed by Daniel Pemberton, is an additional element creating both suspense and tranquility. The combination of sound and strong cinematography feels like an ode to old-school outer space odysseys such as “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Interstellar” and “The Martian.” Weir’s adaptation feels lush, with rich visual and audio quality that complements the heartwarming exposition.

The science fiction movie invites audiences to laugh, hope and wonder. Many viewers may feel a tug at their heart and be irrevocably changed by the immersion into space exploration that uses scientific detail and world-building to bring Weir’s novel to life.

“Project Hail Mary” is a hopeful narrative that emphasizes finding relationships and meaningful connections in the most unexpected places — even in space.

“Project Hail Mary” is in theaters now.
